Peter Lynch Rioter Suicide: A grandpa arrested for violent disruption and attacking police during an anti-immigrant riot this summer has become the first rioter to die in prison. Peter Lynch, 61, who was characterized as a conspiracy theorist in court, is believed to have committed suicide on Saturday night at HMP Moorland near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, according to prison service sources.
Lynch was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison on August 22 after pleading guilty to violent disorder at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court. Lynch was accused of going to the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, on August 4 with a sign calling police officers, MPs, and the media “corrupt”. Lynch yelled “racist and provocative remarks” at cops and referred to asylum seekers in the hotel as “child killers,” according to Sheffield Recorder Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, during his sentencing.
Peter Lynch Death Investigations
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will now probe his death in custody. A jail service spokesman stated, “HMP Moorland prisoner Peter Lynch died on October 19, 2024. As with all fatalities in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.
Lynch, a “family man” who had recently suffered a heart attack, went to the hotel to protest immigration, according to his defense attorney during the August hearing. He had “a general conspiracy theory against anyone and any form of authority,” and his placard included the “deep state” and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). According to the Recorder, a video produced in court showed Lynch “revving up” the situation before it went violent.
He was caught on video calling the cops “scum”. His sign and demonstration were not illegal, but his verbal abuse of police officers during the “racist incident” went too far, the Recorder said.
Uk Government Corruption
Lynch, of Burman Road in Wath-upon-Dearne, was a “full participant” in the chaos, the court heard. “You were unquestionably endeavoring to rev up the situation the best you could,” the stenographer stated. Lynch’s billboard claimed that police chiefs, media, government servants, judges, and the Environment Agency were all “corrupt”.
Police have made around 1,511 arrests in connection with the summer riots and, along with the Crown Prosecution Service, have filed approximately 1,000 charges. The arrests occurred during a prison overcrowding crisis, with jails in England and Wales nearly running out of capacity on the weekend of the August bank holiday following the riots.
Shabana Mahmood, the Justice Secretary, has recently proposed an early release program under which inmates, including many rioters, can be released 40% of the way through their sentences rather than halfway. Terrorist, sexual, and domestic abuse acts are exempt from the system, as are individuals condemned to more than four years in prison for assault.
Lynch would have been eligible, sentenced to less than four years in prison for a violent offense. Ian Acheson, a former prison governor and government consultant, stated, “Any death in custody is tragic.” Not everything can be prevented. “However, the profile of this offender, who was rightfully jailed for his role in rioting, suggests to me that he should have been considered a suicide risk. The investigation which must take place after a fatal incident in a prison will need to explore this about his vulnerability and care.”
