Dr. Jack Taunton Obituary: Delta native and co-founder of the Vancouver Marathon and Sun Run, as well as SportMedBC, has passed away, causing sadness in the running community. Dr. Jack Taunton’s recent death was reported on social media.
Taunton was recently named a member of the Order of Canada in June, and the Governor General’s office described him as “an early leader in sport and exercise medicine,” noting that he was a professor emeritus at UBC, an active fundraiser, and helped found SportMedBC and the Canadian Health and Fitness Institute. “Dr. Jack generously shared his expert medical advice through every injury,” remarked Roger Robinson on Facebook.
According to the School of Kinesiology at UBC, Taunton also served as the medical officer for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, Seoul in 1988, and Barcelona in 1992. He also served as chief medical officer for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well as the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and Paralympics. He worked as a team physician for the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Canadian men’s and women’s national field hockey teams.
He was also recognized locally last year as one of KinVillage’s Seven Over 70 award winners. The Optimist has contacted the family to inquire about any upcoming memorial services.
