Murder Arrest
Five men from Chicago have been federally charged in California, accused of being hired to murder rapper Quando Rondo in Los Angeles due to his suspected involvement in the 2020 killing of King Von. The allegations, which were unveiled Thursday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, exposed connections to Only the Family (OTF), a well-known hip-hop group formed by rapper Lil Durk and located in Chicago.
Murder-for-Hire Charges Unveiled
Asa Houston, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, and Kavon London Grant were all taken into custody and charged with murder-for-hire involving a death, using a machine gun in a violent crime that resulted in death, and conspiracy to conduct murder-for-hire. The charges carry a maximum penalty of execution if found guilty.
According to the prosecution, all five individuals had ties to OTF, a group that Lil Durk, a significant player in Chicago’s drill rap scene and King Von’s mentor, co-founded. The indictment describes how OTF-affiliated credit cards were used to pay for flights and rental cars connected to the murder scheme. Two of the five defendants were found to be members of a street gang in Chicago.
Failed Assassination Attempt in West Hollywood
An ambush in August 2022 in West Hollywood targeted Quando Rondo, whose true name is Tyquian Terrel Bowman, as the culmination of the murderous scheme. When the attackers started fire, Bowman, his sister, and his cousin Saviay’a Robinson were inside a black Cadillac Escalade. Robinson, 24, was shot many times and murdered, but Bowman and his sister were unharmed.
Grant furnished guns and two rental cars for the operation after renting a hotel room for the co-conspirators on August 18, 2022, according to the indictment. Before beginning their attack, the assailants followed Bowman’s car around Los Angeles in a white BMW sedan and a white Infiniti. The two cars were seen following the Escalade between several sites on surveillance footage.
Alleged OTF Connection and King Von’s Death
On November 6, 2020, King Von, whose real name was Dayvon Bennett, was slain in a fight outside a hookah bar in Atlanta. His death has sparked continuing feuds within the drill rap community, and according to federal authorities, Bowman was targeted by OTF-affiliated individuals seeking retribution because of his suspected involvement in the murder. According to reports, an unidentified co-conspirator who is thought to be affiliated with OTF promised money and lucrative recording agreements to anyone who would kill Bowman.
Houston allegedly drove to an alley, allowing Jones, Lindsey, and an unidentified conspirator to escape and carry out the shooting while Bowman was parked at a gas station. The gunman were seen aiming at Bowman’s car in the surveillance footage before fatally wounding Robinson.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
The five men showed up in the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse on Thursday after being taken into custody in the Chicago area. As the matter moves to Los Angeles for additional proceedings, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert ordered their detention.
The most recent repercussion of the unsolved tensions surrounding King Von’s death is the plot. Federal authorities are still looking into OTF’s potential role in a number of violent occurrences. The mother of FBG Duck, another Chicago drill rapper who was slain in 2020, filed a complaint earlier this month, claiming that Lil Durk, King Von, and OTF were involved in her son’s shooting.
Lil Durk and Chicago’s Drill Scene
Founded by Lil Durk more than ten years ago, OTF has played a major role in Chicago’s drill music culture, which is characterized by gang rivalry and violent themes. Popularized by singers like as Chief Keef and G Herbo, drill music has been associated with actual violence, escalating long-standing conflicts between groups.
Authorities are still looking into OTF’s involvement in the violence that has afflicted the drill rap community as the probe progresses, and the federal government is looking into the group’s ties to illegal activity.
