Ellie Claire Young Death: A 26-year-old man has been identified as the suspect who shot and killed a woman during a breast cancer walk at Shelby Farm Park in Memphis, TN on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
26-year-old Jackson Hopper has been charged with First Degree murder in the deadly shooting of the Henning, Tennessee native. Ellie was gunned down around 12:15 pm on Saturday, October 19, at Shelby Farms in Memphis, TN. She was there participating in a walk for breast cancer survivors. According to reports, Ellie was on the walk to support breast cancer because her mother is a breast cancer survivor.
The suspect attempted to use his vehicle as deadly force to run over Dyer County Sergeant Lynn Waller, who set up spike strips at the county line. The pursuit ended when Dyer County Deputy Newman heroically performed a PIT maneuver just inside of Dyer County on Highway 51. He was taken into custody and was transported to a local emergency room for evaluation by Medical Center EMS. Upon searching the vehicle, a loaded handgun was taken as evidence, Dyer County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box stated, “Our agency is praying for the family of the young woman and we are thankful Sgt. Waller and Deputy Newman were not hurt as they performed their sworn duties to serve and protect our citizens

It is with a heavy heart that I am reaching out to our community for support for Ellie Claire Young’s funeral and memorial expenses. Ellie was taken from us too soon. A beautiful soul inside and out, Ellie dedicated her life towards serving others, and was well on her way to becoming an incredible physician. Dyer County Sheriff’s Office; “A murder occurred at Shelby Farms earlier today and the suspect ran from law enforcement authorities in Shelby County which led them on a multi-county high speed pursuit. The pursuit transitioned through Tipton County, Lauderdale County, and was intercepted by Dyer County Deputies on Highway 51 as the vehicle continued going the wrong way into oncoming traffic. .
